Our Pets, We Love
Losing a beloved pet is a profoundly difficult and delicate time. The grief process can be as complex as losing a human loved one. Pets are often considered family, and the bond shared with them is one of unconditional love. You may feel emptiness, isolation, and loneliness, regardless of how many pets you have. Your emotions, may range from deep sadness or guilt to fond memories of joy and happiness, highlighting the significant impact pets have on our lives.
For children, the loss of a pet can be particularly confusing, especially if it is their first experience with death. Their emotions will vary depending on their age and previous experiences with loss, and their reactions may not always be as expected.
Suki and my granddaughter were best friends. Suki was laid to rest in her special place, between 'Mag' magnolia and the bird feeder, with her favourite toys and blankets.
We were worried about how my granddaughter would cope, so we tried to shield her from the moment. Her aunt took her to the park, but they returned sooner than expected.
My granddaughter was able to stroke Suki and say goodbye. In hindsight, this seemed better for her rather than try to hide Suki's death.
A couple of weeks later, when I asked how she felt about Suki not being here, she said, “I see Suki; she comes to play with me in my sleep.”
Each person copes with loss and grief in their own unique way. Whether it’s through talking, photographs, cherished memories, dreams, keepsakes, or a memorial service, you can explore what helps you navigate this difficult period. I am here to support and guide you through whichever paths you choose.
Creating a Memorial ceremony or ritual for a beloved pet can be a meaningful way to celebrate and honour their life and the connection you shared. Remembering your pet in this way may also aid with the grieving process.
A few ways you could have a memorial are:
Plant a tree.
Memory book or box.
Dedicated poem.
Herb garden.
Commission a painting.
Have a gathering in their favourite place.
How you wish to say goodbye is entirely personal.
With empathy and compassion, I am here to support you through this challenging time and help you give your pet a heartfelt, dignified, and respectful farewell.
